What Is Ulzzang?

Ulzzang is a term that first appeared in South Korea, and is a compound word of the face “ulgul” and the best “zzang”. This translates to “the best face” or “good looking”, which is generally used for those who have extra good looks and because of their looks gained popularity on the Internet.

What Is Ulzzang Aesthetic?

The main objective of achieving the Ulzzang concept is to make the most of your appearance and look your best in pictures that you can post on the internet. It’s all about visuals, so this trend includes perfect makeup, like large eyes, pouty lips, high nose bridges, and pale milky skin, and also includes trendy hairstyles, colors, and cute outfits.

There are several things that can help you achieve the Ulzzang appeal and include the following:

1. Ulzzang Base Makeup

Flawless base makeup is a key for Ulzzang look. To create the perfect face, I’d reach for a semi-matte foundation and concealer that can cover all my blemishes.

My current favorite foundation is the Etude House Double Lasting, which is a beautiful medium to full coverage foundation with a semi-matte finish. It has a lightweight texture and the formula blends well.

For concealers, I love to use the Saem Pro Tip Concealer, which is one of my all-time favorite items. It has a creamy and radiant formula, which blends well on my skin and also looks very natural. It’s not as opaque or matte which makes it more ideal for covering dark spots and redness concealing.

After I’ve concealed all the necessary areas of the face, use a large fluffy brush to sweep loose setting powder like the Innisfree No Sebum Mineral Powder onto the forehead, chin, and under-eye area.

2. Ulzzang Eye Makeup

Next  is creating the Ulzzang eye makeup look. Making the eyes bigger and adding some drama is important when achieving Ulzzang makeup.

2-1 Color Contact Lenses

I recommend wearing colored contact lenses first because they generally help create a more beautiful appearance to the eyes, making them look cute, youthful, and fresh.

2-2 Brown Eyeshadow

To achieve a wide-awake eye look with depth and dimension, I like to add natural brown shades on the eyelids. I blend it all around the eye including the lower lid too. Then add some definition to the crease and the end of the under-eye by applying a darker brown shade.

My top eyeshadow palette pick is the 3CE Multi Eye Color Palette in Overtake, which has wearable brown colors and I think they are best on any eye makeup look.

2-3 Aegyo-Sal

Now apply Aegyo-Sal makeup, this is a key feature in Ulzzang look. I normally reach for the Colorgram Aegyo-Sal Maker Pencil in Cak benar as I found that this eyeliner can make aegyo-sal the easy way. Highlight and contour the skin directly underneath the eyes, which is considered the aegyo-sal area, to add a youthful feel and bigger eyes.

I also love to add some shine and sparkles on the under lash lines with the 3CE Eye Switch in Double Note. This helps the eyes look even bigger and brighter, giving a youthful feel instantly.

2-4 Thicken Lashline and Enhance Lashes

Then apply brown gel liner, like the Tonymoly Back Gel Eyeliner, along the upper lash line and create a small and straight tail end.

Finish off by curling my lashes and then apply faux eyelashes and mascara like the Clio Kill Lash Superproof. Faux eyelashes are a great option to give your makeup look a doll-eye allure.

2-5 Straight Brows

Straight, blocky brows make you look cute, innocent, and youthful, making it perfect for the Ulzzang makeup look.

For different color brow shades, I recommend using brighter hues than your natural hair so choosing light brown shades in general is the better choice.

To get the look, straighten up your brow by making feathery strokes. I also love to apply a brow tint to match the shade. Then brush through the brows to get a more natural finish.

To complete the look, I use the Clio Kill Brow Pencil in Natural Brown and Etude House Brow Tint in Natural Brown.

3. Ulzzang Face Makeup

Now it’s finally time to add some colors and dimensions to the face to create a smaller face effect.

3-1 Blush

To complete my cheeks with a flush of color I apply the perfect amount of flush with the 3CE Mood Recipe Face blush in Nude Peach to the apples of my cheeks. Hit the apple of the cheek with blush starting at the most prominent part of the cheek, blending color towards the nose and bringing it out towards the temple.

3-2 Contour V-Line

Then I reach for the darker shade powder, like the Too Cool For School Artclass by Rodin, to contour the face line. I like to apply it below my cheekbones, down the sides of the nose, along the jawline, and across the forehead by using a fluffy makeup brush. Make sure to blend well to get a flawless look.

3-3 Highlight Nose Bridge

Since Ulzzang look is all about bright and youthful complexion, highlighting is a must. I normally use the Clio Prism Air highlighter in Gold Sheer to create the look of dimension. This product is one of my favorite highlighters that contrasts and absorbs any sallowness in my complexion and brightens effectively. I like to mainly apply the powder to the bridge of the nose to fake a high nose and center of the face if needed.

4. Ulzzang Lip Makeup

Last but not least, finish off the Ulzzang makeup look by creating Korean gradient lips. Korean gradient lips have a “just bitten” effect, with a darker color concentrated in the center of the lips, then fading out at the edges.

I use MLBB velvet texture lipstick like the Peripera Ink Matte Stick in Rose Fiction for the base and apply it all over the lips. Then I reach for the vivid bright color of lip tint like Peripera Ink Velvet in Hotspot Red to apply it to the inner center of the lips. Then smudge the lips using a finger or brush.

Another of the major lip makeup tricks I can spot from the Ulzzang makeup trend is a high-gloss look. So you can use a lip tint that has a glossy finish too. This gives a wet or glass-like finish and is perfect for a dramatic Ulzzang makeup look.
